Faith vs Works

Now we enter a point of contention between Christians.

Calvinists maintain that man is only redeemed through faith.

Catholics maintain that man is redeemed through works and not faith alone.

Point in question; take a person, who lived an exemplary life, filled with good works and a caring nature, yet never did ever hear about any god, and dies. Is this person denied heaven?

Then take one who has all the faith in the world but never did one good deed?

Will this person gain salvation?
