Energy cannot be created or destroyed

This author seems to quote the law of thermodynamics then interpret them leaving out certain parts that would  make his argument in this chapter null and void. Energy can be changed from one form to another,  but it cannot be created or destroyed. The total amount of energy and matter in the universe remains constant,  merely changing from one form to another.

Using this argument that the universe would be out of energy by now fails  when held up to the very laws the author is quoting.

Question to the author: How much energy is in the universe, and how much is left?
