More on the Big Bounce

The 13-19 December 2008 issue of New Scientist made the Big Bounce its cover story[1]

Abhay Ashtekar has shown that using a theory known as Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC) that the Universe arose, not out of a singularity, but by recycling an earlier collapsing universe. Possibly there has been and will continue to be an endless cycle of expansions and contractions, each successive universe recycling the previous one.

LQC is an application of Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) referred to earlier. While the Big Bounce is not yet close to replacing the Big Bang as the general scientific consensus, the theoretical underpinnings of this theory are gradually moving to a more secure foundation. It is entirely possible that it will become the prevailing theory within the next decade or so, particularly if experimental evidence is found in support of the theory. The search is underway.

And maybe then there will be one less gap for a god to hide in.
