I won't even try to tackle the question about the differeing genealogies, but the second question is quite simple, that regarding the necessity of proving Davidic (and kingly) descent for Jesus.

The reason is primarily theological: many prophecies in the Hebrew Bible refer to the davidic line of kings and God's faithfulness to that line. No one, even God himself in the flesh, could be the beneficiary of such prophecies unless he was of davidic descent. (God promised the kingship to David's line, 'nuff said.)

Jesus, in order to claim those prophecies for himself, would also need to be descended from the davidic line of kings.
