Less Passion in the Black Hills

Taking the same route in April this year through the Black Hills as I did seven years ago, I noticed that the advertisements for the Passion Play had nearly all gone. The few remaining billboards which mentioned it had it grouped with other attractions, and the advertisements were modified to show the play was now cancelled. A little research, and I found it ended with the 2008 season after seventy years.

I have not been able to determine the reason it closed, but I suspect it was business reasons... tourists voted with their dollars... on other Black Hills attractions. Perhaps the major increase in advertising I observed on in 2004 was a last ditch effort to reverse an ongoing decline.

You can't always make a buck from religion.
