I can relate with Evan. My story is similar, so I won't go into it, but I would like to try a response to Kristen Pope's question if I may.

I can't answer for Evan, but for me, the turning point was trying to reconcile a god of unconditional love who is also jealous and vengeful (lower-case "g" is intentional). What sort of "loving" god or "parent" would punish his children for an eternity for not following the right "rules" or believing a certain way?

Add to this the numerous inconsistencies and contradictions that can be found in the Bible, a collection of books written thousands of years ago by men claiming to be inspired by God. They were only men. Why should I trust them or the numerous interpreters of those books? For me, any arguments based on scriptures from the Bible may as well be based on "The Iliad" or "The Odyssey of Homer".

I hope this clears up a few things, and I hope I haven't stolen too much of Evan's thunder.
